Silkscreen On Fabric: Engaging + Exchanging Repetition

This 2-session Silkscreen course (2 × 3 hours) explores the implementation of one or more design elements to create a repetitive improvisational print on fabric. Students will also be encouraged to share their designs and collaborate with fellow participants allowing for infinite rhythmic possibilities and communal exchange. An organic, improvisational dance of colors and shapes on Fabric.

What to Expect:

Session 1 (3 hours):

  • Students design one or more elements on frosted mylar using opaque markers, focusing on rhythm.

  • All designs are combined onto a pre-coated silkscreen ready for photographic exposure.

  • After exposure, the screen is washed with water to reveal an open stencil.

Session 2 (3 hours):

  • Students prepare fabric and colors for printing.

  • They discuss color mixing and think about the story, mood, and meaning behind their color choices.

  • At print stations, students handprint design elements repeatedly on fabric using flip sheet registration to create patterns.

  • Students rotate stations, combining each other’s designs to make unique, improvised prints, sharing a communal experience.

  • Each student leaves with a one-of-a-kind collaborative print made by the group.

  • The class explores turning fabric prints into products like bags, pillows, clothing, or soft sculptures.

  • The session ends with a group discussion reflecting on the individual and group work.

  • Individual and collaborative prints and products will be displayed together.
